What is the difference between Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is quite a new term for most of us. However, GEO is trending these days thanks to the emergence of AI. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) seem similar but their objectives are a bit different. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has been an important pillar of digital marketing for a long time. It is aimed at refining the content of websites to achieve better rankings in search engine results pages (SERPs). SEO strategies, in particular, focus on keyword research, on-page fixing, and link building. In SEO, it is equally important to create content that aligns with search engine algorithms. The idea is to increase organic traffic by making content more discoverable for users searching for specific keywords.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), on the other hand, focuses on optimizing content for generative AI models, such as ChatGPT. AI models generate content based on user inputs instead of pulling information from existing web pages. GEO involves creating content that is easily understood by AI systems. This includes using clear and concise language, incorporating structured data, and ensuring that the content aligns with the AI’s training data.

The main difference between GEO and SEO lies in their approaches and target platforms. While SEO aims to improve rankings in Google like traditional search engines, GEO aims to enhance content compatibility with AI-based generative models. As AI becomes more integrated into search and content creation, GEO is expected to play a larger role in digital marketing strategies.
